Convert Illustrator CS5 to CS3 or older version

See complete article below…which is great….although it doesn’t completely solve everyone’s issue…

What if you are using CS3 or CS4 and someone hands you a CS5 Illustrator eps.  Oops.  Here’s what you do…

There is a simple work around for Mac users.  You should be able to open the file in question (CS3, CS4 or any other version) using Apple’s default “Preview” Application.  Once the file is open you can then “Save As” a “PDF” version.  Once saved as a “PDF” you should be able to open the file in any version of Illustrator you are running on your system…Mac or PC.  :)

Downsaving in Adobe Illustrator

THIS IS THE BETTER OPTION….if you can remember to do it.

For all of you who can’t figure it out (or keep forgetting how to down-save, like me), here is a quick tutorial:

  1. Open the problem child file.
  2. Go to File > Save As.
  3. Save as a new *.AI file.
  4. A new dialogue box will pop up. It will look like this:Down-saving in Illustrator
  5. Down-save to the version you require.
  6. Petition Adobe to make all files Backwards Compatible

In Illustrator CS3 go to File>Place – This works as well and is the easiest way…

If you have it InDesign CS3 will open it. You can then save it as a PDF from there.
